Recomendado: 7 herramientas clave gratuitas (II)

5. Lang-8

5. Lang-8

This platform allows you to publish texts in the target language to be corrected by other users which are native to that language. You can also correct texts in your own language published by other users who are learning it.

But it ain't only that, as around this tool there is a whole community of users, where you can add friends, send private messages and share experiences through a personal journal.

A point system gamifies at a certain level the experience in the site, encouraging the users to publicly interact and correct texts. The points you obtain will decide which rank you'll be placed in the general rank list.

6. italki

Although the page is focused on paying for online language classes by teachers or tutors from the community, it is possible to use the site free to contact other users and share or exchange your language with them, so you can receive some inputs of the target language from native users.

Creating a profile is easy and free, same as the other functions offered (rather than proper lessons): a forum to discuss and ask or answer about a language, a space where you can read articles written by teachers or tutors of the community offering their expertise and a notebook where you can publish your own texts, for the users to correct if suitable.

7. Verbling

Similar to the before mentioned web, you can also find some language exchange options although the web is more oriented for private lessons.

Although in the past there were language exchanges, currently there aren't. When you first met you exchange partner, you had five minutes to talk in your language and another five for the language of your partner. And after that, you had the chance to add the user as friend to continue sharing in the future. There was also the chance of creating groups with other students of the same target language to practice and share your apprenticeship. Sadly, these features don't work, currently.

Apart from that, you could check some group lessons, where you could not participate without paying, but you could watch the old sessions for free in YouTube, in order to improve you listening comprehension. Currently, you can only check in the YouTube teachers' channel the old recorded sessions, as currently, there are no more group sessions thrown through Verbling.

At this point we can only add some other useful and effective tools for the development of the remaining skills (listening and reading comprehension).

Motivation is key when we deal with self learning, so, it is a must using tools that, even if are not focused on language learning, will be interesting, entertaining and motivating for us.

To be on the track for these kind of materials, keep an eye on this section. Being our blog one that works mainly with ludic and entertaining materials for self learning, we will be sharing tools and means related to games (videogames, role playing games...), videos (tv series, YouTube...), readings (articles, books...) and some other, that can be free or not.

Recomendado: 7 herramientas clave gratuitas (I)

En este primer apartado de la entrada de hoy queremos presentar siete herramientas que os serán muy útiles para el aprendizaje del español, todas gratuitas. Algunas de ellas sirven también para el aprendizaje de otros idiomas. Con estas siete herramientas cubriremos algunas áreas de gramática, vocabulario y pronunciación, así como las destrezas de expresión oral y escrita. ¡Vamos a ello!

Recommended: 7 free key tools (I)

In this first part of today's post we would like to introduce seven free tools that can be really useful to learn Spanish. Some of them can be used to learn other languages. With these we can aprehend grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, as well as oral and written skills. Let's go to it!

Eventhough Spanish isn't a complicated language for pronunciation, having in mind the writing basis, it's useful to have a page that can be checked as a guide when needed.

Here you can find words, and even phrases which contain those words, pronounced by native speakers (in this case Spanish). Next to the user name you can check the country, so, you'll be able to listen to the distinctive accents.

You don't need to register in order to use it, although, if you did create a user, you could record the pronunciation of the words in your native language, as well as give and recieve reviews to and from other users.

While in the first tool we shared, we talked about the affordability of Spanish pronunciation and reading comprehension, with this second tool we present one of the most difficult parts of the Spanish grammar: the verb conjugation.

In this web site you will find a conjugation model of the verbs, whatever their verbal form, infinitive included.

Have in mind that, if the ending of the verb you introduce shares the ending of one of the model verbs, it will be conjugated following the pattern even if it doesn't exist in Spanish and without locating possible spelling mistakes.

You will find as well a translator that lets you listen the pronunciation of the word searched. In case your keyboard doesn't have the Spanish special characters, both tools have access to them in case you need it.

3. WordReference

Although this web site has also a verb conjugator, we highlight WordReference for its translator.

When searching a word, apart from the translation and pronunciation, you will find some other options of great interest: definition, synonyms, antonyms, images, "in context" and forum discussions related to the word.

The "in context" section will adress you to articles in Google News which contain the term. This way, we will have a reference on how the native use the term. As you see, it's a really complete tool on the amount of information given from a single term.

4. Linguee

Same as before,  Linguee is also a dictionary with pronunciation, featuring the fact you can search in it complete phrases.

It contains a linguistic corpus of external resources that can help us locate the natural context of a word or phrase.

Also, it has a free app for Android and iOS, which doesn't need an internet connection to work properly.

Recommended: free ebooks

Reading is one of the best ways to learn new vocabulary and language structures within a context, or simply to reinforce or refresh the already achieved knowledge. In the first levels of CEFRL it's obvious that not any book in the target language will do. That's why graded readings exist and are specialy useful in the first levels, even if you can find them for all the levels.

To those students already in top levels, to find free legitimate readings, even if these are not graded, can be really useful. That's why we're sharing these two entries from other blogs for you to enjoy these books. If in a future we step onto other similar posts, we will refresh this post with the new links.
